Charleston
Founded in 1670, Charleston is one of
America's most beautiful historic cities and played a
significant role in the early founding and independence of the
United States. Hundreds of carefully preserved structures from
the colonial and antebellum periods including original
plantations combine to represent over 300 years of fascinating
history. Revolutionary War history abounds with legends of the
Charlestonian patriots intertwining the past with the present.
The Civil War began for Charleston residents as they hosted the
secession convention in December 1860, which led South Carolina
out of the Union, the first of eleven Southern states to
withdraw. Four months later, the war escalated in Charleston
harbor when Southern forces fired on the U.S. garrison at Ft.
Sumter.
Steeped in colonial and Gullah history,
Charleston offers a delightful palate for the senses including
unique cuisine, colorful scenery, and an array of art, dance,
drama and musical events.
Savannah
Founded in 1733 by British General James
Oglethorpe, Savannah's unique historic district encompasses 2.5
square miles, the 22 beautifully designed squares included in
the original city plan, and more than 2,400 architecturally and
historically significant buildings. In the past, Savannah was
considered such a rare treasure that in 1864 Union General
William Sherman, spellbound by its beauty, presented the city as
a Christmas gift to President Lincoln, thus preventing the
burning that devastated other Southern cities during the Civil
War. Today, the preservation of our historic treasures provides
Savannah with renowned landmarks and antebellum architecture.
Gracious Southern hospitality and a charming
historic district combine to provide a unique and memorable
experience for Savannah visitors. Picnics in the beautiful parks
and city squares, cruises on local waterways, a relaxing
afternoon tea, or an exclusive champagne carriage ride are only
a few of the unforgettable moments to enjoy in this intriguing
city bordered by a lush tropical shoreline and offering a mild
climate with an average temperature of 67 degrees. Nearby Hilton
Head offers beautiful beach resorts and world-class golf at
Harbor Town.
Sea Island
Sea Island’s concept was born in 1910 when
visionary Howard Coffin, founder of the Hudson Motor Company,
was attending an automobile race in Savannah and fell in love
with the magical Georgia coast. On year later he purchased the
20.000 acres of marsh and highland that make up the island. By
1925 a cottage colony had emerged and a bathhouse and dance
pavilion were built by the sea. Nearby residents flocked to the
island for beach fun and bi-weekly dances. Golf was added in
1927. Sea Island became renowned as an exciting destination and
has been host to many celebrities and dignitaries such as
President Calvin Coolidge, Eugene O’Neill, Sarah Churchill, the
Eisenhowers, and George and Barbara Bush.
Today visitors enjoy the serenity and natural
beauty of the island. A great getaway for a family vacation, the
resort offers youth programs with fun and educational
activities, a relaxing haven for sunbathers, and challenging
golf.
